Never would I ever say that I need an incentive to check out Oprah’s favorite things list. There’s usually something on there to catch my eye. This year, I will be making some purchases with a different energy. Much of the list this year features Black or Black led businesses. I love it!

This year has been one for the record books on every level. From COVID bringing on this pandemic life to the deaths of major figures, it’s been quite a year. Another huge factor of the year has been the racial reckoning that erupted over the Summer. That caused companies big and small to focus more on Black issues. Many brands have been elevating Black voices. It only makes sense that one of the most notable Black celebrities would use her clout to uplift Black businesses. Uncle Nearest whiskey is one we’ve heard tons about. The back story is that a formerly enslaved man named Nathan Green (some mistakenly called him Nearis) perfected whisky making while hired out to Dan Call. Jack Daniel went to work for Call and learned the method of whiskey making from Green. Crazy enough, descendants of Green went on to work for Jack Daniel for generations.
