We try to drop a new read on the site on a regular basis. The goal is to share good reads that really resonated with us for one reason or another. The current book certainly checks that box. The Girl with the Louding Voice will sit with you.

This book will make you want to scream! There was so much we wanted so much for the main character. It just seemed like she couldn’t catch a break. We really NEEDED her to have some reprieve from all the horror thrown her way. She is a Nigerian girl and only wants an education. That is her number one goal in life. Her mother instilled in her that education was her only option for a better life. It’s her mothers’ sole wish for her only daughter to be able to go to school. Her mother is the number one advocate in her family for her education. Then her mother dies.

After her death, the family falls on hard times financially. As a result, he goes back on his promise to continue to educate her because the family needs money. So, the only choice he sees is to marry her off so that he can get the bride price and pay the family’s bills. She literally becomes her family’s only way to survive in his eyes.

She ends up marrying a man old enough to be her dad. Problematic much? And to make matters worse, she’s wife number three. So she’s even low on the totem pole as a wife. Oh, did we mention that she’s 15? Ah! We wanted so much more for her. Her life only gets crazier from here. There is a glimpse of hope at the end though. So, all is not lost.
