Who decides what’s toxic parenting?

Who decides what’s toxic parenting?

When it comes to parenting there’s no real handbook. We’re all just winging it. Literally giving what we have and hoping that’s enough. The thing is you don’t know for sure until your kids are grown. Then you can see if the seeds you’ve planted were nurtured and bear fruit or if things went left.

Well, what do we make of what’s going on with Kirk Franklin and his adult son? At this point we’ve all heard or heard about the audio of the gospel star using some choice words directed at his son. Of course we know about his because his son recorded it and shared it with the world. From what we know, there have been issues between the two for YEARS. Like Kirk was on a program way back asking for prayers because his family was going through some things concerning his son. It’s sad that they still have issues.

From what we’ve seen around the web, people are divided a little but mostly team Kirk. People have shrugged it off, saying that their parents have cussed them out at various points through their life. Others have dismissed it saying your kids can take you there. Some people still have said Kirk went to far. They say that no one should be talking to their kid like someone from the streets.

As we’ve been reading commentary one thing that comes up often is toxic parenting. The idea that just because something was done to us that doesn’t make it right. That doesn’t mean it’s not toxic. The bigger conversation is in Black households and what some of us deem ok – when it really isn’t.

Saying you were cussed out by your parents doesn’t mean that it’s ok to get cussed out by your parents. It has us wondering how much are we bringing with us from our childhood that we really need to leave behind. Each generation certainly does things differently. Hopefully, better. Still, it’s a job we take on with no handbook and we hopefully, do our best.

Are you raising your kids the way you were raised? What did you keep? What did you change?
